ICON is a Cryptocurrency, the network powered by DPoS (consensus mechanism based on stacking) algorithm. The original software was developed by DAYLI Financial Group from KR and first released August 24th, 2017. Nowadays the cryptocurrency is managed by the ICON Foundation, an organization based in the KR. Smart Contracts are supported by the ICON blockchain. ICON is an interconnecting blockchain network; the project developers are building a global alternative to the Ethereum blockchain, a smart contract platform connecting independent blockchains without the use of additional third-party intermediaries. The mission is "to hyperconnect the world"; if achieved, the ICON blockchain will become the largest decentralized network in existence.
The native utility token of ICON blockchain is ICX: it's a cryptocurrency that can be used for real-time payments and also is a protocol for connecting the blockchain world in ICON network. ICX originally was an ERC20 standard token issued on the Ethereum blockchain during the ICO (Oct 20, 2017 — Nov 20, 2017). Once the ICON own blockchain was started, the tokens were migrated, ICX ERC20 tokens support stopped May 25, 2018.
The network utilizes a modified form of dPoS consensus mechanism: Loop Fault Tolerant (LFT) algorithm. Nodes participating in transactions verification and carrying the governance functions are called "C-Reps" (all others are "Citizen Nodes", the ones without the governance rights). Malicious C-Reps nodes (the ones proposing/validating invalid blocks) are penalized by burning their ICX deposits. Transaction fees are set to 0.01 ICX, which doesn't depend on the amount transferred. ICON offers a self-developed smart contract platform, the "SCORE"; the source code is based on Python language. Some third-party projects completed ICOs on the ICON platform, issuing their own tokens on top of this blockchain.
