Kusama is a public blockchain network that runs the exact same codebase as Polkadot. It is intended to serve as a canary build for the Polkadot network, acting as an experimental and development environment for new features that will eventually be deployed to Polkadot. Because of its experimental nature, Kusama's developmental speed is much faster, and it has seen significant traction since launching in 2019. Kusama is described as an early, highly experimental version of Polkadot that presents real economic conditions. The community owns the network, with no central kill switch, and it will exist as long as its community maintains it. It is envisioned to cater to new, early functionality and projects preparing to develop and deploy on Polkadot.
