Worldcoin is a project aiming to build the world's largest identity and financial network as a public utility, with the goal of giving ownership to everyone. It focuses on developing foundational infrastructure for a world where AI plays an increasingly large role. The system revolves around World ID, a privacy-preserving global identity network that allows users to verify their humanness online while maintaining privacy through zero-knowledge proofs. Individuals can prove they are real, unique humans to any integrated platform, which can enable fair airdrops, protection against bots, and fairer distribution of resources. The Worldcoin token (WLD) is designed as a utility token with governance properties, allowing users to participate in governing the protocol. To engage, users download a wallet app and visit a physical imaging device called the Orb, operated by independent local businesses, to get their World ID verified. The Orb uses multispectral sensors and deletes images on-device by default. Orb-verified World ID holders can claim recurring grants of free WLD tokens, subject to availability.
