Polkadot is a platform that enables diverse blockchains to transfer messages, including value, in a trust-free manner, while sharing their unique features and pooling security. It is described as a scalable heterogeneous multi-chain technology, flexible in that it makes no assumptions about the nature or structure of the chains in the network. Even non-blockchain systems or data structures can become parachains if they meet certain criteria. Polkadot can be seen as a set of independent chains (e.g., Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Namecoin, Bitcoin) with added pooled security and trust-free interchain transactability. Many native parachains are built using a Polkadot Runtime Environment SDK, such as Parity Technologies' Substrate.
